Abstract

Literary criticism witnessed a great development in concepts and methods as a result of its influence on modernity and its intellectual, cultural and scientific foundations.

Accordingly, the article seeks to define criticism as a human activity, an intellectual dialogue, a theoretical practice, and an expression of a holistic stance towards literature. As for modernity, it is a Western perception related to all aspects of man, and a manifestation of progress, development, and renewal that touched the fields of life and moved to literature and criticism.

Arab literary criticism was influenced by modernity intellectually and influenced it by creating a new conceptual and linguistic device in understanding literary phenomena, tasting them, describing them, and revealing their characteristics.

Based on the foregoing, the work aims to reveal the relationship between criticism and modernity, how does the Arab critic represent its categories, and what does he mean by critical modernity? And what are its manifestations?
