Sport Psychology, COVID-19 and Role of Athletes in Cultivating Resilience and Fostering Spirituality in general Public: A Case Study
Abstract
This paper serves to provide a rapid analysis into the intersection of sport psychology, COVID-19 pandemic, and the unique role of athletes in nurturing resilience and promoting spirituality within the wider community. The objective of this paper is the identification of strategies for post-COVID-19 sport with a particular focus on the role of athletes’ influence. Focusing on a case study of renowned athlete and influencer Yuzuru Hanyu, the study explored how his experiences from previous adversities and actions during the COVID-19 pandemic have served as a source of motivation and resilience for individuals facing adversities. Further, references to the Olympic Games and community recreational motivation and emotional attachment towards their favored athletes’ programs are made. Through a qualitative analysis of Hanyu's interviews, public statements, and media coverage, key themes related to the role of athletes in promoting mental fortitude, coping mechanisms, spiritual growth and resilience among individuals facing challenges emerged. The goal of this paper is to stimulate discussion to sport psychology practices, inspire public health research initiatives and attract community resilience programs and encourage sports’ governing bodies transformative potential of sports figures in fostering positive psychological outcomes amidst crisis situations.
