Fiqh and Tasawwuf represent two complementary dimensions of the Islamic intellectual and spiritual tradition. While Fiqh primarily concerns understanding and deriving practical legal rulings from the Sharīʿah, Tasawwuf focuses on spiritual purification, moral refinement, sincerity, and cultivating an intimate relationship with Allah Almighty. Although these disciplines differ in their immediate objectives and methodologies, they are not inherently contradictory; rather, they address the outward and inward dimensions of religious life and together contribute to the holistic realization of Islamic teachings. The relationship between Fiqh and Tasawwuf becomes particularly significant when examined in light of their sources and foundations. Both disciplines are fundamentally rooted in the Qur’an and the Sunnah, which constitute the primary sources of Islamic guidance. Fiqh further develops its legal framework through established principles of Islamic jurisprudence, including Ijmāʿ, Qiyās, and other recognized juristic methodologies, while Tasawwuf derives its principles of spiritual discipline and ethical cultivation from the Qur’anic teachings, Prophetic example, and the lived practice of the early Muslim community. This study examines the common scriptural foundations of Fiqh and Tasawwuf and analyzes the nature of their relationship from an epistemological and methodological perspective. It argues that their apparent distinction does not imply separation or opposition; rather, their proper integration reflects the comprehensive character of Islam, in which adherence to the Sharīʿah is complemented by spiritual purification and moral excellence. The study therefore highlights the importance of maintaining a balanced relationship between legal observance and spiritual development for a comprehensive understanding and practice of Islam.
